Empathy in recruitment, candidate experience

Importance of empathy through the recruitment process

Today, the business leaders have come to understand the importance of building strong teams. They acknowledge that people and people-relations are a key driving factor in the long term productivity and sustainability of a company.

If there were one ‘factor’ that could build teams and work-relationships faster, it is ‘Empathy’.

“Empathy is the most important quality any company can cultivate in its interactions with candidates. It’s what differentiates a great employer from a good one.” – Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft.

Empathy along hiring process

In the context of recruitment context, being empathic means to be able to perceive and relate to the thoughts, emotions, or experiences of the candidates undergoing the interview process.

During an interview, a candidate confides that they are having to juggle ‘finding a job’  and ‘caring for a sick family member’. The interviewer understands the candidate’s concern. He offers to provide extra time for the candidate to prepare and let’s her pick a date and time of convenience for the interview.

This seemingly little gesture by the interviewer demonstrates the company’s culture of being mindful and empathetic to people. It builds trust, and goodwill between the two people.

Practices like these must be encouraged at workplaces to elevate candidate experience, and make the recruitment process more inclusive.

Empathy influences positive outcomes  for the employers

Being empathetic can create a win-win situation for both employer and the candidate.

Here’s a list of ways, it will help the recruiters and the company.

  • Reduce offer reneges: Candidates who have a good experience during the hiring process are more likely to want to work for the company and may be more likely to accept a job offer.
  • Employee engagement and retention: Employees who feel valued and respected during the hiring process are more likely to feel satisfied and engaged in their work, which can lead to increased retention rates.
  • Employer brand building: Candidates who have a good experience during the hiring process are more likely to recommend the company to others, which can help to attract top talent in the future.
  • Increased productivity: Employees who feel valued and respected during the hiring process are more likely to be motivated and engaged in their work, which can lead to higher levels of productivity.

Candidates can benefit from empathy in recruitment in a number of ways too. Here are a few:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: When candidates feel that their concerns and feelings are being understood and taken into consideration, they may feel more relaxed and at ease.
  • Improved communication: Empathy allows both parties to understand and appreciate each other’s perspectives and experiences. This can help to create a more open and honest dialogue during the hiring process.
  • Positive and inclusive atmosphere: Empathy can help to create a positive and inclusive atmosphere during the hiring process, which can make candidates feel more valued and respected.

  • Being understanding of any challenges or issues that candidates may be facing, such as job insecurity or challenges related to the current job market
  • Being responsive and timely in communication with candidates, and providing clear and honest feedback
  • Providing resources and support to candidates throughout the hiring process
  • Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all candidates, regardless of their background or identity
  • Being transparent about the company culture and expectations, and being honest about the challenges and opportunities that the job entails

Empathy is a trait especially relevant in the post-pandemic world, where many people may be facing unprecedented challenges and stressors. By demonstrating empathy, you can show that you care about the well-being of your candidates and are willing to go the extra mile to support them. This will enhance candidate experience and in turn strengthen your company brand image.
