Crafting your Vision, Mission and Purpose Statements well

Every company (without an exception) must have a well-articulated Vision, Mission, and Purpose statements. However, one needs to be aware of the distinction between these, and their inter-relatedness.

Let’s first understand the distinction between them.

  • Vision Statement: This outlines the company’s long-term goals and aspirations. It paints a vivid picture of what the organization aims to achieve in the future. It’s often forward-looking and inspirational, providing direction to the company.
  • Mission Statement: This focuses on the company’s core purpose and reason for existence. It answers the question, “Why do we exist?” It typically describes the company’s primary business, target audience, and the value it provides.
  • Purpose Statement: This delves into the company’s deeper reason for being. It goes beyond making profits and highlights the positive impact the company wants to have on society or a specific group. It’s about the “why” behind what the company does.

And then, the next step – how must founders and leaders approach the task of defining their company’s Vision, Mission and Purpose statements.

  1. Reflecting on Values: Identifying the core values and principles that drive their passion and the company’s ethos.
  2. Defining Impact: Articulating the desired impact the company aims to have on its stakeholders and the world.
  3. Setting Aspirations: Crafting clear, concise statements that inspire and guide the company’s long-term goals, daily actions, and societal contributions.

Finally, let’s also understand WHY must a company craft it’s vision, mission and purpose statements. We have listed a few obvious benefits here.

  1. Alignment: These statements provide a clear sense of direction and alignment for employees. When your workforce understands where the company is headed (Vision), why it exists (Mission), and what values drive its actions (Purpose), they can better connect with and contribute to the company’s goals.
  2. Employee Engagement: Well-defined statements can boost employee engagement. When employees resonate with the company’s purpose and mission, they are more likely to be motivated and engaged in their work.
  3. Attraction and Retention: Candidates are attracted to companies with a compelling vision and purpose. Such statements act as a magnet for top talent who want to work for an organization that stands for something meaningful. Moreover, they can help retain employees who share those values.
  4. Cultural Cohesion: These statements foster a cohesive company culture. When everyone understands and believes in the vision, mission, and purpose, it creates a sense of belonging and unity among employees.
  5. External Branding: They play a vital role in external branding. A well-articulated purpose can connect with customers, partners, and the broader community, enhancing the company’s reputation.

In summary, Vision outlines where you want to go, Mission defines what you do to get there, and Purpose explains why it matters to you and the world. When these statements are well-crafted and integrated into your Employer Branding efforts, they can be powerful tools for attracting, engaging, and retaining both employees and customers.
